Adding a little something extra

For cartographic purposes, we often add layers to the map for purely aesthetic reasons. For example, we might add in a State Outline twice—once as a crisp border, and once as a drop shadow. Let's create a simulated drop shadow for our Counties map:

  1. Right-click on the State Outline layer and select Copy.
  2. Right-click on the Map Frame name (US Counties) and select Paste. You now have a second State Outline layer (make sure that this does not create an extra copy of the file in your folder; it merely adds the same file to your map for the second time).
  3. Drag this layer to the bottom of the Drawing Order and change its name to Drop Shadow.
  1. Change the outline to gray 30% and 4 pt, and click Apply:
