‘Xiànzài’ here is used as a Time Adverbial. Time adverbials indicate when an action takes place. A time adverbial can be put before the subject, or between the subject and the predicate. E.g.

‘Xiànzài tā zài zhōngxué jiāo yīnyuè.’ Or ‘Tā xiànzài zài zhōngxué jiāo yīnyuè.’ Later we will learn more about the position of time adverbials.
